The difference between Body Attack and Body Pump

Exercise Specialist and owner of outdoor personal training company Exercise Sydney, John Allen, answers your burning fitness questions.

What is the difference between Body Attack and Body Pump. I want to lose 3kg, so which is better for me?

Body Attack is a 55-minute sports-inspired cardio work-out that's all about improving your speed, fitness, strength and agility by combining high-energy interval training with aerobic movements, strength and stabilisation movements.

Body Pump on the other hand is a barbell-based class aimed at working all the major muscle groups in the body by using weight-room-type exercises such as squats, presses, curls and lifts. The weight of your barbell is up to you and the class is designed to strengthen and tone your muscles — not bulk them up!

If you had to choose one class over the other for burning fat then Body Pump would be the best option. In a 13-week trial comparing Body Pump, Body Step, Body Attack, Body Combat, and RPM, subjects in the Body Pump group lost the most fat.

Personally, I would suggest signing up to both classes and alternating between the two. It's very important to keep your body guessing and even more important to keep exercise fun and interesting!
